Er wordt nogal met citaten gesmeten over en weer. Dus ook maar eens een duit in het zakje gedaan, bij “Frontaal Naakt”. Citaten van Friedrich Engels over het gebruik van geweld. Even later gekeken of er een reactie was. Jawel, de site was gehackt. Merkwaardig.
Hoe ik op dat smijten met citaten kom? Op 8 juli j.l. verschijnt een artikel in de Volkskrant van de Israëlische auteur David Grossman met als titel: “Israël moet eigen belegering opheffen”. “Israël moet, puur om te kunnen overleven, de uitruil van soldaat Gilad Shalit en Hamasgevangenen aangrijpen voor het sluiten van een bredere overeenkomst met Hamas.” Zo begint zijn beschouwing over de huidige relatie tussen Israël en Hamas met als kern van het betoog de vraag wat realistische politiek zou moeten inhouden.
Op dat stuk wordt gereageerd met honderden reacties met vooral een opvallend kenmerk, supporters over en weer. Het lijkt wel voetbal, als het niet zo treurig was. Het proberen in de huid van een ander te kruipen is er niet bij. De onmiddellijke reactie op een dergelijk voorstel is dat je weggezet wordt als “islamofiel”, wat dat dan ook moge betekenen. En het stompzinnige historische gelijk wordt weer gehaald, de lijstjes met nietszeggende jaartallen om te bewijzen, in dit geval, hoe anti-joods die Arabieren en Moslims wel zijn. Dat schiet niet echt op, het blijft bij een plaatsvervangende oorlog, in de krant uitgevochten, en volkomen zinloos. Niemand is er bij gebaat, de hardliners en haatzaaiers uitgezonderd.
Die hardliners lijken uitgerust met een plaat gewapend beton voor het hoofd, met kreten als “Palestijnen? Wie?” De munitie hebben ze paraat, citaten, waarmee men de ’tegenstander’ om de oren kan slaan. Illustratief is het volgende. Op 15 juli – 13:52 verwijst iemand naar de Israëlische historicus Shlomo Sand met de vraag of het Joodse volk wel bestaat. Aan het stukje wordt een link toegevoegd van “Een Ander Joods Geluid”. Om 13:53 verschijnt een stukje van ene Mike_DB. Nauwelijks een tiental minuten later verschijnt van diezelfde Mike al een reactie m.b.t. Sand. Hoe is dat mogelijk?

Israel Bartal, dean of the humanities faculty of the Hebrew University, in a commentary published in Haaretz, writes that Sand’s basic thesis and statements about Jewish historiography are “baseless”. Bartal answers to “Sand’s arguments (…) that no historian of the Jewish national movement has ever really believed that the origins of the Jews are ethnically and biologically “pure” [and that] Sand applies marginal positions to the entire body of Jewish historiography and, in doing so, denies the existence of the central positions in Jewish historical scholarship.” Bartal refers to Sand’s overall treatment of Jewish sources as “embarrassing and humiliating.” He adds that “The kind of political intervention Sand is talking about, namely, a deliberate program designed to make Israelis forget the true biological origins of the Jews of Poland and Russia or a directive for the promotion of the story of the Jews’ exile from their homeland is pure fantasy.” Bartel summarizes his critique of Sand’s characterization of Jewish historiography as follows: “as far as I can discern, the book contains not even one idea that has not been presented earlier in their books and articles by what he insists on defining as “authorized historians” suspected of “concealing historical truth,”” and calls the overall work “bizarre and incoherent.”
Jeffrey Goldberg likened the book to Arthur Koestler’s The Thirteenth Tribe, another book with a controversial thesis on the genesis of the Jewish people published in 1976. “Today,” Jeffrey Goldberg said, “The Thirteenth Tribe is a combination of discredited and forgotten.” Goldberg also accused Sand of having disingenuous motives:
“Sand is not publishing this book at a dignified conference in Bern at which scholars of the Middle East debate the origins of the Jews … He is dropping manufactured facts into a world that in many cases is ready, willing, and happy to believe the absolute worst conspiracy theories about Jews and to use those conspiracy theories to justify physically hurting Jews. … It is nothing new … We [the Jews] survived … The Thirteenth Tribe; we can survive this.”
Deze vorm van discussiëren kan slechts een doel hebben. Mondsnoeren, propaganda voeren. Grondtoon negatie van alles dat niet in deze kraam past. Bij deze een tip. Wilt u een discussie frustreren, leg een archiefje aan van bruikbare citaten. Zelf lezen hoeft niet, nadenken nog minder. Iets weten is volstrekt overbodig.
